Did Jesus Claim to Be God?

11 Times Christ Verbally Expressed His Deity

Have you ever met someone who said, “Jesus never called himself God and didn't consider himself to be God”? People with this belief fail to acknowledge a number of key pieces of evidence to the contrary.

In his message “The Great I AM,” Dr. Stanley enumerates at least 11 times Jesus verbally expressed His deity to His followers:

  1. When Philip asked Him to show them the Father, Christ said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).

  2. “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me” (John 14:11).

  3. “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30).

  4. By saying, “Before Abraham was born, I am,” Christ was claiming not only pre-existence but His identity as I am—the name of God (John 8:58).

  5. “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst” (John 6:35).

  6. “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture” (John 10:9).

  7. “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep” (John 10:14-15).

  8. “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

  9. “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life” (John 8:12).

  10. When the Jewish rulers asked Jesus if He was the Son of God, He answered, “Yes, I am” (Luke 22:70)

  11. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me” (John 14:6).

There are many more ways Jesus expressed His divine nature—including the miracles He performed, the prophecies He fulfilled, and predictions He declared. In addition, God the Father expressed His approval at Jesus’ baptism (John 1:32-33), and the earth shook and the dead came to life at the crucifixion (Matt. 27:52-53).

At the evidence of Christ’s deity, may we all make the same proclamation as the Roman soldier on Calvary, “Truly this [is] the Son of God!” (Matt. 27:54).

Dr. Stanley shares more about Jesus’ divine nature in his message “The Great I AM.”

What happens to my notes

9 Jesus said to him, Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, `Show us the Father'?

11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.

30 I and the Father are one."

58 Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."

35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.

9 I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

14 I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,

15 even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

5 I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."

70 And they all said, Are You the Son of God, then?" And He said to them, Yes, I am."

6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

32 John testified saying, I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.

33 I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, `He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.'

52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;

53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, Truly this was the Son of God!"
