Who has made a great impact on your life? Jesus called His followers “the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13) because He wants us to create a thirst in those who don’t know Him. When unbelievers find the message of salvation appealing, they’ll long to “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalms 34:8).
In Bible times, salt was collected from evaporated seawater. When too many impurities were gathered with the salt, it became taste- less. Likewise, if sin contaminates our lives, others will see no need for the Savior because it seems He’s made no difference in our lives.
Jesus also said believers are “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). If our words, attitudes, and conduct reflect negative aspects of our culture, we’ll be like a soot-covered lantern. But if, instead, we shine as bright reflections of Christ, our example will point to Him and reveal truth previously hidden by darkness.
The power to impact others is not so much in what we do, but in who we are. Throughout my life, many people have helped to shape my character, thoughts, and behavior, though I don’t always remember their specific words or actions. In turn, I want to make a positive impact on others, whether through a one-time encounter or a long-term relationship.
As a child of God, you are called to reflect Jesus through your conduct and conversation. If you make this your priority, there’s no telling how far-reaching an impact you’ll have.
