Our True Identity in Christ

August 2015: A Word From Dr. Stanley

Think about the last time you felt discouraged. Did an obstacle seem insurmountable? Were you overwhelmed by a sense of worthlessness? Whatever the cause, you probably had a hard time focusing on anything besides the situation.

Discouragement is a tool Satan uses because he knows it hinders our fruitfulness and witness.

Discouragement is a tool Satan uses because he knows it hinders our fruitfulness and witness. The last thing he wants is for us to catch a glimpse of God’s perspective. But that’s exactly what we need to do in order to see the silver lining on our dark cloud.

Peter wrote a letter to a group of people who were discouraged because of persecution. He reminded them that they were “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.” We need to remember how precious we are to the Lord—not only did He choose us but He also tells us we are His own cherished possession (1 Peter 2:9).

Notice that believers are designated as a royal priesthood. We’re no longer required to slaughter animals. Instead, we are called to offer sacrifices of praise to God (Heb. 13:15). Yes, when we’re discouraged, this is probably the last thing we feel like doing, but it’s the only way to shift our gaze from the troubling situation and see God working through our circumstances.

Although our difficulties may remain, when we lift our eyes upward, the light of Christ will break through those dark clouds of despair and give us hope.

What happens to my notes

9 But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.
