Which job has the greatest influence? Some may say president or prime minister, but in my opinion, mothers have the most significant impact. And Jochebed is one of Scripture’s most influential and inspiring mothers.
She was a Hebrew slave in an impossible situation. At a time when Egyptian law required drowning all male Hebrew babies, Jochebed gave birth to a beautiful boy. But she let faith in God overcome fear of Pharaoh (Heb. 11:23). She hid her baby at home as long as she could but eventually reached the point every righteous mother one day faces: She had to let go of her child and surrender him into God’s care.
Can you imagine how hard it was to place her precious baby in a basket on the Nile and watch him drift away? Realizing his identity would probably be surmised (Ex. 2:6), she showed enormous trust in the Lord by doing so. But God is a rewarder of faith (Heb. 11:6), and His grace was unmistakable: Jochebed not only got to care for her own son in his early years but was actually paid for that service! Then in a remarkable irony, the slave child Moses was raised as royalty in the home of the very ruler whose death decree he had evaded. The blessing eventually spread to all the Hebrew slaves when Moses led his people out from Pharaoh’s grip.
Life is still full of uncertainties. Won’t you position yourself for blessing by stepping out in faith like Jochebed? You’ll find trust in God is never misplaced.
